Carmen Sanz, RallyUp Pickleball coach

Carmen Sanz

Your coach for the day

Hi, we're Carmen & Bennett — we'll be your coaches on Sunday, September 20.

We're a husband-and-wife coaching team, both certified. Carmen grew up in Spain playing every sport she could find, and pickleball is the one that never let go. Together we run one of the East Bay's busiest pickleball programs — clinics, leagues, and camps every week at Lafayette Tennis Club, most of them full of people who picked up a paddle for the first time this year.

We never coach a camp solo — you get both of us on court all morning, so sixteen players still get small-group attention. Plenty of people show up nervous about being the new one. That's exactly who this day is for.

How we coach

  1. 1

We watch you play first, then teach. We'd rather find the one thing holding you back than run the same speech for everyone.

  2. 2

We fix one thing at a time so you're never overwhelmed. The change that matters most today, then the next.

  3. 3

We keep it easy on the body. You'll leave tired in a good way, not sore.

Come in brand new, and here's what usually happens by the end:

  • Your serve starts landing in, over and over.
  • The soft dinking game finally makes sense.
  • You move your feet instead of reaching for balls you shouldn't.
  • You leave with a few new friends and a plan for what's next.
8:30 AM – 12:30 PM · your day, hour by hour

Here’s your whole Sunday.

8:30

Names first, then paddles

Meet your group, easy warm-up, first rallies while Carmen and Bennett start reading your game.

8:50

The court, in plain English

The kitchen, the two-bounce rule, scoring. Ask anything.

9:10

Grip & soft hands

Looser than you think. The touch drill that makes day one feel like week three.

9:30

Dinking, the soft game

The little shot everyone talks about, drilled until it stops popping up. Ends with a longest-rally contest.

10:05

Serve & return

In. Deep. Repeatable. Drilled against a target until it's yours.

10:35

Break

Water, a seat in the shade, and the part where the group chat gets made.

10:45

Volleys & the third shot

Hands at the net, and the one shot that gets you up to where points are won.

11:20

Where to stand in doubles

Move together, take the middle, stop colliding with your partner.

11:40

Real games, coaches courtside

Live points with Carmen and Bennett calling what to try next.

12:20

Your path forward

A recap of what you improved, and what to work on next week.

It was never about the paddle.

A camp group huddled around the coach on court

The paddle is just the excuse. What actually changes is that you stop saying maybe next time when someone asks you to play, and you walk onto a court full of strangers knowing you belong there.

You spend the morning with people in exactly your spot, learning the same things at the same speed. Nobody is waiting on you, nobody is showing off. By the last hour you're laughing between points with people whose names you didn't know at 8:30.

Most groups swap numbers before they leave, and the chat keeps going long after camp day. That's how a Sunday morning turns into a standing thing you look forward to all week.

All of it starts on one Sunday morning

A quick gut check

Is this camp for you?

It’s for you if…

  • You picked up a paddle recently and love it, but real games still feel shaky
  • You're 40, 50, 60, 70. Most of our players are
  • You want a coach watching your game, not a lecture with a paddle in your hand
  • You'd rather learn alongside other beginners than sink-or-swim at open play

It’s not for you if…

  • You're a 4.0 with tournament weekends booked
  • You want 20 straight games and zero coaching
  • You're looking for a kids' program

FAQs

What if I've barely played? Will I be the slowest one there?
No. This camp is built for beginners and newcomers, so everyone is either holding a paddle for one of the first times or has played a few months and still feels like they're guessing. Carmen and her co-coach read the room in the first half hour and group the drills so people move at a speed that matches them. By the end of the morning you'll be playing real points with people you'll want to play with again.
What's the venue like?
Lafayette Tennis Club is a tree-lined club in the Lafayette hills with nine lighted courts, set up for pickleball on camp day with proper nets and lines. Clubhouse restrooms, seating, water, and free parking on site. You show up, and everything you need for the morning is there.
Isn't it hot outside in September?
That's exactly why this camp runs 8:30 to 12:30. East Bay mornings in September are cool, usually 60s when we start, and you're done before the afternoon heat shows up. There's shade for the break and water on site.
I'm in my 50s, 60s, or beyond. Is this really for me?
Yes, and you'll be in good company. Most of our players are 50 and up. The pace is structured, not punishing, there's a break in the middle, and the drills adapt to any injury or limitation you tell us about when you register.
Do I need a rating to come?
No. No rating, no tryout, no proof of anything. If you've heard people mention DUPR numbers and felt out of the loop, this is exactly the camp for you. We ask a couple of quick self-rating questions when you register and slot you in.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes, and we'd recommend it. Most beginners learn faster showing up with someone they know. Register together, mention each other in the notes, and we'll keep you grouped during the drills.
Will I actually get individual attention with 16 players?
Yes — because there are two certified coaches on court, not one: Carmen and her husband Bennett, a husband-and-wife team who teach these clinics together every week. That's the same 8-to-1 attention as our 8-player camps, with a bigger group to play real points against. A week after camp Carmen sends you a written plan based on what she saw from your game specifically.
What do I bring?
Your paddle, court shoes, a water bottle, a hat and sunscreen for the morning sun, and athletic clothes. We provide the balls, and loaner paddles are available if you don't have your own yet — just tell us in the notes.
What if I can't make the camp date?
Cancel any time before camp day for a full refund. One quick email to help@rallyuppickleball.com is all it takes, no questions asked. If we ever have to cancel — including for weather — you get a full refund or full credit, your call.
How does the guarantee work?
Two parts. First: cancel any time before camp day and you get every dollar back — one quick email to help@rallyuppickleball.com, no questions asked. Second: if you attend and the camp doesn't win you over, tell us within 7 days of camp day and your seat at a future camp is on us — one make-good seat per person, at any upcoming camp with space available.
