Your coach for the day

Hi, I'm Deb Harrison. Most people call me PicklePong Deb.

I spent a career in classrooms. High school, then college, a bachelor's and a master's in education, and a lot of years standing in front of people who had never once done the thing I was about to teach them. That's the actual job. Not being the best player in the room. Being the one who can get somebody from nothing to something before the day is out.

I found pickleball in 2004, back when you still had to spell it for people. I've taught it every year since. Twenty-one years, and I've yet to meet a beginner I couldn't have playing real points by the afternoon.

Somewhere along the way I got competitive about it. Over 120 medals now, including gold at the Minto US Open and gold at the National Senior Games, and in 2018 Florida named me its Senior Games Female Athlete of the Year. I mention it not because it'll fix your dink, but so you know the person teaching you can still do it when it counts.

And if you've ever searched how to hit a third shot drop, there's a decent chance we've already met. Over 200 instructional videos on YouTube as PicklePongDeb, nearly all of them made because a student asked me the same question twice and I figured somebody else was wondering too.

Recreation Plantation is my home court. I'm the teaching pro here, so on Sunday, September 27 you're not getting a coach who flew in for the day. You're getting the person who runs these courts.

How I coach

  1. 1

One thing at a time. Twenty-one years of teaching says a new player handed ten corrections leaves with none of them. Hand them one, the right one, and it's still there next week.

  2. 2

I watch before I talk. You've got one or two habits quietly costing you most of your points, and they're not the same as the habits of the person on the next court. Blanket advice is how a camp wastes your morning.

  3. 3

Making those videos changed how I teach in person. When you explain a third shot drop to a camera and nobody can raise a hand, you learn to say it in plain words the first time. You get that same version here, with follow-up questions allowed.

  4. 4

And I teach the rules properly, because that's the real reason people quit this game. Not the dink. Not the serve. It's standing in the wrong spot, not being sure whose ball it was, and not wanting to look silly in front of strangers. We kill that in the first hour.

Walk in having never played, and here's how you walk out:

  • Your serve lands. Not now and then, consistently, and you'll know why.
  • You know the kitchen rule, the two-bounce rule and how to keep score, without anyone prompting you.
  • You stop reaching for the ball and start moving your feet to it.
  • You play real points in front of other people, and enjoy it enough to book the next one.

9:10

Grip & soft hands

Looser than you think. The touch drill that makes day one feel like week three.

Serve & return

In. Deep. Repeatable. Drilled against a target until it's yours.

10:35

Break

Water, a seat, and the part where the group chat gets made.

10:45

Volleys & the third shot

Hands at the net, and the one shot that gets you up to where points are won.

11:20

Where to stand in doubles

Move together, take the middle, stop colliding with your partner.

It was never about the paddle.

A camp group together on court

The paddle is just the excuse. What actually changes is that you stop saying maybe next time when someone asks you to play, and you walk onto a court full of strangers knowing you belong there.

You spend the day with seven people in exactly your spot, learning the same things at the same speed. Nobody is waiting on you, nobody is showing off. By the afternoon you're laughing between points with people whose names you didn't know at 9am.

Most groups swap numbers before they leave, and the chat keeps going long after camp day. That's how one Sunday turns into a standing thing you look forward to all week.

All of it starts on one Sunday

A quick gut check

Is this camp for you?

It’s for you if…

  • You picked up a paddle recently and love it, but real games still feel shaky
  • You're 40, 50, 60, 70. Most of our players are
  • You want a coach watching your game, not a lecture with a paddle in your hand
  • You'd rather learn with 7 other beginners than sink-or-swim at open play

It’s not for you if…

  • You're a 4.0 with tournament weekends booked
  • You want 20 straight games and zero coaching
  • You're looking for a kids' program

FAQs

Isn't it hot outside in Florida in September?
That's exactly why this camp runs 8:30 to 12:30. You're on court early, in the coolest part of the day, and finished before the afternoon heat and the storms show up. There's shade for the break and water on site.
I'm in The Villages. How far is this?
About ten minutes. Recreation Plantation is on Highway 466 in Lady Lake, just north of The Villages, with 14 outdoor courts and free parking right by them. The full address is on this page.
What if I've barely played? Will I be the slowest one there?
No. This camp is built for beginners and newcomers, so everyone is either holding a paddle for one of the first times or has played a few months and still feels like they're guessing. Your coach reads the room in the first half hour and groups the drills so people move at a speed that matches them. By the end of the day you'll be playing real points with people you'll want to play with again.
Where is the camp, and what's it like?
Recreation Plantation. It's a comfortable, welcoming place to play, with restrooms on site, somewhere to sit during the breaks, and parking close by. You show up, and everything you need for the day is there.
Do I need a rating to come?
No. No rating, no tryout, no proof of anything. If you've heard people mention DUPR numbers and felt out of the loop, this is exactly the camp for you. We ask a couple of quick self-rating questions when you register and slot you in.
I'm in my 50s, 60s, or beyond. Is this really for me?
Yes, and you'll be in good company. Most of our players are 50 and up. The pace is structured, not punishing, there's a break between drilling blocks, and the drills adapt to any injury or limitation you tell us about when you register.
Can I bring a friend?
Yes, and we'd recommend it. Most beginners learn faster showing up with someone they know. Register together, mention each other in the notes, and we'll keep you grouped during the drills.
Will I actually get individual attention?
Yes. 8 players, four hours, one coach who can watch every rep. That's why the cap is 8 and not twenty. A week after camp your coach sends you a written plan based on what they saw from your game specifically.
What do I bring?
Your paddle, court shoes (no street shoes on indoor courts), a water bottle, and athletic clothes. We provide the balls, and loaner paddles are available if you don't have your own yet — just tell us in the notes when you register.
What if I can't make the camp date?
Cancel any time before camp day for a full refund. One quick email to help@rallyuppickleball.com is all it takes, no questions asked. If we ever have to cancel for weather or low attendance, you get a full refund or full credit, your call. If camp day passes and we haven't heard from you, the seat counts as used.
How does the guarantee work?
Two parts. First: cancel any time before camp day and you get every dollar back — one quick email to help@rallyuppickleball.com, no questions asked. Second: if you attend and the camp doesn't win you over, tell us within 7 days of camp day and your seat at a future camp is on us — one make-good seat per person, at any upcoming camp with space available.

Sunday is four hours. The game is yours for years.
