Your coach for the day

Hi, I'm Bob Savar.

I've been teaching pickleball since 2018, and coaching racquet sports a lot longer than that. Before this I coached varsity tennis at high-school level, which is where I learned that the player who improves fastest is almost never the most athletic one in the group.

I've written six books on the game, including one on pickleball for seniors, and I run a local meetup that's grown past 1,600 people. Nearly everything in those books came from watching the same mistakes happen at the same level, over and over.

I still compete. Palm Beach County Senior League champion, and a gold medal in mixed doubles at the 2019 Delray Beach Pickleball Classic.

But the reason to come to this one is narrower than any of that. Between 3.0 and 3.5 you already own the shots. You're losing points you should be winning, and that's a pattern problem, not a technique problem.

How I coach

  1. 1

I watch you play before I say anything. At this level the leak is specific, it's yours, and it usually isn't the thing you think it is.

  2. 2

I go after errors before I go after weapons. A handful of unforced errors decides nearly every game in this band. Fix those and your rating moves without you learning a single new shot.

  3. 3

I teach the third shot properly — when to drop, when to drive, and how to tell which one the ball in front of you is asking for. That single decision separates 3.0 from 3.5 more than anything else.

  4. 4

And we play. Live points, with me courtside calling what to try next, because a pattern you've only drilled isn't a pattern you own.

Come in at 3.0, and here's how you leave:

  • You know the two or three errors costing you most of your points, by name.
  • You can tell a drop ball from a drive ball before you hit it, not after.
  • You and your partner stop leaving the middle open.
  • You stop losing games to people you're better than.

What your $249 seat covers.

  • 4 hours of coaching with a world-class certified coach
  • Your personalised performance plan, emailed after camp
  • Lifetime access to our players community
  • Courts, balls and paddles all provided
  • A few more surprises waiting for you after camp day

Your path forward

A recap of what you improved, and what to work on next week.

Your day, block by block

Your 4-hour beginner agenda.

Here's exactly how the day runs. Your coach reads the room and adjusts the timing, but this is the shape of it. Every block is built for adults picking the game up later, and every one leaves you with something you didn't walk in with.

Welcome & warm-up20 minutes

  • Meet your coach and the small group you'll spend the day with
  • An easy warm-up made for grown-up bodies, not 20-year-olds
  • A first relaxed rally while your coach starts reading your game
  • No pressure, no showing off, everyone here is new too

Learn the court20 minutes

  • Where you stand and what the kitchen line actually is
  • The double-bounce rule and how scoring works
  • The handful of basics that make the rest of the day make sense
  • No test, no jargon, ask any question you want

Grip & soft hands20 minutes

  • How to hold the paddle, and how tight (looser than you think)
  • A no-paddle catch-and-throw drill so you feel soft hands first
  • Small paddle adjustments that make a big difference
  • Court shoes vs. street shoes, and why it matters for your knees

Dinking, the soft game35 minutes

  • The little shot everyone talks about, and the most important one
  • Straight-on and cross-court dinks at the kitchen line
  • Why the ball pops up when you reach, and how to stop it
  • A friendly longest-rally contest to end the block

Serve & return30 minutes

  • A serve you'll actually use: in, deep, the same every time
  • A return that buys you time to get to the net
  • Drilled with a target on the court so you see it working
  • No more double faults handing the other team free points

Break10 minutes

  • Water, a sit-down, a chance to catch your breath
  • Swap notes and phone numbers with the group

Volleys & the third shot35 minutes

  • Hands at the net (a volley is hitting before the bounce)
  • The one shot that gets you from the baseline up to the net
  • Where the points are actually won, and how to get there
  • Compact swing, keep the ball low, stay ready

Where to stand in doubles20 minutes

  • The two or three rules that make you a better partner today
  • Move together, take the middle, get to the line when it's safe
  • When to reset a point instead of forcing it
  • Calling the ball so you and your partner stop colliding

Real games & your take-home plan30 minutes

  • Live points with your coach courtside calling what to try next
  • A recap of what you improved today
  • What to work on next week, in plain language
  • The written plan lands in your inbox within a week

It was never about the paddle.

A camp group together on court

The paddle is just the excuse. What actually changes is that you stop saying maybe next time when someone asks you to play, and you walk onto a court full of strangers knowing you belong there.

You spend the day with seven people in exactly your spot, learning the same things at the same speed. Nobody is waiting on you, nobody is showing off. By the afternoon you're laughing between points with people whose names you didn't know at 9am.

Most groups swap numbers before they leave, and the chat keeps going long after camp day. That's how one Saturday turns into a standing thing you look forward to all week.

All of it starts on one Saturday

A quick gut check

Is this camp for you?

It’s for you if…

  • You picked up a paddle recently and love it, but real games still feel shaky
  • You're 40, 50, 60, 70. Most of our players are
  • You want a coach watching your game, not a lecture with a paddle in your hand
  • You'd rather learn with 7 other beginners than sink-or-swim at open play

It’s not for you if…

  • You're a 4.0 with tournament weekends booked
  • You want 20 straight games and zero coaching
  • You're looking for a kids' program

FAQs

I'm a 3.0. Will I be the worst one there?
No. The band is 3.0 to 3.5 deliberately and it isn't wider. A 4.0 in the room would make the drills too fast for you; a 2.5 would make them too slow. Everyone there is inside one rating step of you.
I don't have a DUPR rating. Can I still come?
Yes. DUPR is a guide, not a gate. If you play regularly, hold rallies, and know the rules without thinking about them, you're in the right room. If you're unsure, call or text us and we'll work it out in two minutes.
